Buck v. Bell

No. 292 SCOTUS · Decided SCOTUS

Case Overview

Upheld Virginia's compulsory sterilization of Carrie Buck, an inmate of a state institution, against due process and equal protection challenges, with Justice Holmes writing that three generations of imbeciles are enough. Tens of thousands of Americans were sterilized under laws it validated. Never formally overruled, it is taught as anticanon and as a warning about judicial deference to confident science.
