Case Overview

Reaffirmed the dual-sovereignty doctrine: successive state and federal prosecutions for the same conduct do not violate the Double Jeopardy Clause, because an offense against each sovereign is a separate offence. The 7-2 decision declined to overrule 170 years of precedent; Justices Ginsburg and Gorsuch dissented separately.
