Ninth Circuit upholds press protections in LA immigration-protest suit, but narrows the order

Journalists, legal observers, and the Los Angeles Press Club sued DHS and Secretary Kristi Noem after federal officers injured members of the press during the June 2025 immigration-raid protests in Los Angeles. They claim the officers retaliated against them for protected activity and violated the public's right of access to protests, both under the First Amendment. The district court granted a preliminary injunction restraining the officers' conduct. On April 1, 2026, the Ninth Circuit affirmed that the plaintiffs were entitled to injunctive relief but held the injunction overbroad, vacating and remanding for the district court to craft a narrower one. The case is before Judge Hernan D. Vera in the Central District of California.
