Case Overview

Established the governing three-part obscenity test: whether the average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find the work appeals to the prurient interest; whether it depicts sexual conduct, specifically defined by law, in a patently offensive way; and whether it lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value. Replaced the Roth-Memoirs regime and remains the standard today.
