Orozco-Ramirez v. United States
Case Overview
Roberto Orozco-Ramirez, a mechanic and little league coach in Froid, Montana (undocumented, from Mexico), was arrested by Border Patrol in January 2026 on an illegal reentry warrant. The small conservative community of Froid rallied around him. In April 2026, federal prosecutors dismissed the felony illegal reentry charge after defense attorneys challenged the legality of his 2009 deportation order on due process grounds. Attorney Laura Christoffersen filed a habeas petition; Chief Judge Brian Morris ordered his release in May 2026, finding months of detention without a bond hearing likely violated procedural and substantive due process. He was welcomed home by the town of Froid.
