Pierce v. Society of Sisters

SCOTUS · Decided Decided

Case Overview

Oregon passed a law requiring nearly all children to attend public schools, which would have shut down private and religious schools. The Supreme Court unanimously struck it down, holding that parents have a constitutional liberty to direct the upbringing and education of their children. The case is a cornerstone of substantive due process and parental rights.
