WPATH sues the FTC over a civil investigative demand targeting transgender-care guidelines

The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), which publishes the Standards of Care for gender-affirming treatment, sued the Federal Trade Commission after the agency served a civil investigative demand on the group on January 16, 2026. WPATH argues the investigation is First Amendment retaliation, an attempt to silence and punish proponents of science-based care for transgender people by targeting the organization's noncommercial speech and its clinical guidelines. WPATH seeks a declaratory judgment and an injunction. The defendants include the FTC and its chair, Andrew Ferguson, and Commissioner Mark Meador. The case is before Judge James E. Boasberg in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
