Redistricting

Redistricting litigation runs on two tracks: challenges to maps that dilute minority voting strength under the Voting Rights Act and the Fourteenth Amendment, and challenges to maps drawn for partisan advantage. After the Supreme Court closed the federal courthouse door to partisan-gerrymandering claims in Rucho v. Common Cause (2019) but left racial-gerrymandering and Voting Rights Act claims intact, the fights have concentrated on race-and-representation disputes like those over Louisiana's and South Carolina's congressional maps. A new front opened in the 2026 cycle, as several states moved to redraw congressional lines mid-decade, and litigation over those maps is unfolding in state and federal courts.
